Butterfly Lifecycle

The most amazing of all transformations is the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly.  But, the caterpillar is only one of four stages in the life cycle.  There are the four stages necessary for a butterfly to have “complete metamorphosis.”  Depending on the type of butterfly, the life cycle may take anywhere from one month to one year.  The four stages include:

  • Butterfly Life Cycle – Egg: 3-7 days
  • Butterfly Life Cycle – Caterpillar: Several weeks
  • Butterfly Life Cycle – Chrysalis: 1-2 weeks
  • Butterfly Life Cycle – Adult Butterfly: Approx. 2 weeks; however, some species will overwinter by migrating south and live for many months

The entire transformation is really quite remarkable, and the reason why the butterfly is a compelling symbol of transformations of all kinds – physical, emotional, and spiritual.  To come into a deeper realization of the wondrous world in which we live, visit our “Butterfly Garden” page, and create an environment where you can see this transformation for yourself.  And, read further for details about the lifecycle stages.
